XXX Hall of Famer and 70s/80s icon SEKA gets down with LRI

Seka, the “Platinum Princess”,  is an icon of the XXX business and on the short list of adult stars that truly remained legends from the 70s through the 80s and beyond.  She even dated Sam Kinison.  Those who follow the steamy side of Hollywood often speak about the “Golden Era” of the XXX business.  They generally bring up the days of  “Deep Throat” on the big screen, lavish adult productions, the dawn of the VHS industry and stars like Seka, John Holmes, and Vanessa Del Rio.   She was the original Jenna Jameson. We got a chance to talk to Seka, a.k.a. Dorotheia Patton about her life, her career and found her answers to be almost as revealing as her movies.  Read on………

Q:  You were born and raised in Virginia …. how was your upbringing?

A:  I had a really good childhood for the most part.  I was born and raised in the hills of Virginia.  I was a really normal kid, I went to school, had parents.  I didn’t really enjoy school, I wanted to mess around more than anything else

Q:  You’ve made a career out of being a sex symbol and using your looks.  When did you start attracting attention for that from people?

A:  Hmmmm…I don’t know, I didn’t really pay that much attention to boys for the most part.  I played a lot of sports, I probably started getting attention about 8th or 9th grade when I started playing sports.

Q:  How did that make you feel?

A:  (laughs) Oh, I thought boys were just SICK (laughs).  I wanted nothing to do with boys at all.

Q:  You were a beauty pageant queen  and then the story goes that you and an ex boyfriend  owned a series of adult shops in the Virginia area.  You complained about some of the quality of the dirty movies and  then found yourself in front of the camera instead of behind the counter.  Is that accurate?

A:  Yes, although it’s been reported that I owned them with my husband which is NOT true.  It was a guy who I was dating, thank GOD I never married that asshole (laughs).  That’s pretty much how it happened though.  These adult distributors that were dealing with our stores said “Well, if you think you can do better then you should do it”.  So I was like, “Ok…I can do that and I can do it better!”.   I started out doing magazine layouts, a bunch of them and then that led to the movies.

Q:  What do you remember about doing those early photo shoots for the print magazines?

A:  I remember that I had a really good time, all the time.  I enjoyed doing what I did.  They were very nice layouts and it was fun.

Q:  Allegedly you worked under different names before settling on SEKA after meeting a female blackjack dealer who had that name.  Is that also true?

A:  I never used any aliases.  The people that did the films or distributed tagged me with some which I never approved.  There were things put out with my image and the name “Linda Grasser” which I have no idea whatsoever where that came from.  “Sweet Alice” is another one, I shot a movie where my CHARACTER’s name was Sweet Alice but if you go to my Wikipedia page it’s listed as an alias.  I don’t know if the name SEKA set me apart as much as the fact that I was one of the first platinum blondes to do adult.

Q:  You are famous for better or worse for being one of the first stars to be completely shaved which was kind of shocking in that early era.  Of course now after years of Playboy and Howard Stern almost every girl on earth does it.  What was the initial reaction from co-workers, fans?

A:  (laughs).  Well, for starters it was called for in the script.  Yes we had those back then (laughs).  To be honest, it was REALLY comfortable for another thing.  I think it’s pretty funny and ridiculous that I’ve been called the QUEEN of shaving (laughs), because I wasn’t.  I always kept a little bit of hair.  I think you need a little bit to be able to find it (laughs).  I remember the fans and people on set loved it.  I do remember that.  They all went completely crazy and loved the fact that I shaved my puss (laughs).  It was more “In Your Face” if you will…..

Q:  You made so many appearances in the Swedish Erotica series of movies and magazines, did people start to actually believe that this blonde haired, big breasted girl was actually FROM Sweden???

A:  Yes, they did.  It surprised me too because if you really, really look at me I don’t actually look like I’m from Sweden.  I have brown eyes.  Most Swedes have blue eyes, I didn’t have a Swedish accent in real life or in any of my movies (laughs).  My actual heritage is American Indian and Irish, like a lot of people from Virginia.

Q:  You’ve taken pretty good care of your legacy and your website SEKA.COM is proof but a lot of girls that were in the industry haven’t been as smart or lucky.  Did you ever find yourself falling into the typical porn-girl traps of drugs, alcohol or bad relationships?

A:  There were always bad relationships to be had.  I didn’t have THAT many of them.  I did my share of drinking.  I did my share of drugs.  I’ve heard people report that I’ve done rehab which is something I did NOT do.  I just did what I did and then decided I was done and didn’t do it anymore.  I don’t think I stopped because I was worried about it affecting business I think I stopped because I was just done with it.  I don’t think that the industry forces anyone into those kinds of problems.  Look at Charlie Sheen for god’s sake.  He’s had every privilege in Hollywood and has more problems than anyone in porn.  I think either you’re an addictive personality or you’re not.  Some people are some people aren’t.

Q:  You’re also not one of the women who retired from the adult business and then decided to trash it.  Where are those people coming from?

A:  I don’t know.  I don’t do movies anymore but I LOVE the industry.  I have tried to be good to the business and the business has been very good to me as a result.  At this point either people like me or they don’t.  I believe in what I’ve done and my reasons for doing it, I DECIDED to do it.  Why would you decide to do it and then be stupid about it and trash your own legacy, saying you never wanted to do it, someone MADE you do it and all this B.S.  That’s just dumb.

Q:  Nina Hartley had said that no one has ever been forced into it, they all come fresh faced off the bus begging to be in it.  If someone was trapped in a closet calling the police the LAPD would be more than happy to bust a set, they’re looking for a reason to bust a set.

A:  She’s right.  That’s true.  That’s why it’s so dumb for anyone to insist they were coerced.  People were always very kind to me on set and I always wanted to be there, I loved it.

Q:  Have there been any girls in the last few decades that have caught your eye or stood out?

A:  I thought Jenna Jameson was very good.  Tera Patrick,   I thought they were both very smart, which is a good thing.  I always liked Anna Malle, Tori Welles, Christy Canyon.  I don’t know all of these women personally so it’s hard for me to say but I like what they’ve done.  I like watching them, their attitude and performance.

Q:  What has your main focus been since you retired from the movies?

A:  Mostly SEKA.COM.  I enjoy running it and I keep it up to date constantly.  I add new photos all the time and there’s a members section that has all kinds of free movies from my entire career included and photo sets.  There’s a shop, where you can purchase, posters, autographed photos, my actual clothing (laughs).  It’s a lot of fun maintaining my site and a great way to stay in touch with fans.  I also do lots of personal appearances, stuff like Sci-Fi fests or Chiller fest.

Q:  You hosted a radio show here in the Chicago area for quite some time correct?

A:  Yes!  WLUP, the LOOP.  It was a sex advice call in show called Let’s Talk About Sex.  It was on every Saturday night in the area and it was four hours of phone calls and fun.  I loved doing it.  It was an absolute BLAST.  I’ve done a million radio appearances over the years but it was very satisfying to do my own show.  It was great!

Q:  What would we find if we went through your record collection?

A:  You would find a lot of Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, all of that good 60s and 70s rock and roll.  I definitely was a part of all of that.   Wherever you find rock and roll you will inevitably find hot pussy.  That’s just the way it was and I’m sure the way it STILL is.  I also have a bunch of blues, jazz and country in my collection.

Q:  Do you wanna sell them to me (laughs)?  Do you still have a turntable?

A:  I don’t have a turntable but I kept them all because most of them are all autographed (laughs).

Q:  You dated Sam Kinison, what was it like when the world’s most famous comedian and most famous porn star walk in a room arm in arm?

A:  (laughs).  Yes I did and it was pretty wild.  He was a lovely person but he was tough to deal with at the same time.

Q:  The lifestyle?

A:  He was just a CRAZY fucker.  Seriously (laughs).  It was pretty much a scene when we would walk in a room and he would bring me up onstage with him and people would go nutty.  He could be a real sweetheart sometimes behind the scenes or he could get a little nuts if he’d been up too long if you know what I mean.  He was an interesting fellow, I will SAY that.  It was sad that he died at the hands of a drunk driver after having gotten clean, very sad.

Q:   The adult business is at a crossroads.  People don’t seem to give a shit about any of the stars or how good the actual movie is. Tori Welles had told us that she thinks the business is on life-support and is dying fast.  Is that true and what killed it?

A:  Yes, I’ve never heard it put quite so succinctly.  That’s an excellent way of putting it.  I agree with that statement 100 percent.  Free Porn killed it.  Everyone just gives it away on the internet and it just contradicts the old statement “nothing in life is free”.  As far as the people not giving a shit about the stars, people have to remember that noone is going to give a shit about you if you don’t give a shit about yourself.  You have to care about yourself, your name and all of that.  That’s the reason I did well, the reason Marilyn Chambers did well, Jenna Jameson on down.  If you don’t take care of YOU or give a shit what happens to YOU then trust me when I say NOONE ELSE WILL!!!  You cannot depend on anyone else but yourself and YOU are in charge of your own career or decisions or you BETTER be.  I think part of the problem is these girls agreeing to do anything and then what else is there?  If you’re agreeing to be spit on, pissed on, slapped and whatever else then you are responsible for noone else valuing you.  And then some of those same people will turn around and say they were forced to do so, COME ON!!!  I knew everything I was asked to do and if there was something I didn’t wanna do I DIDN’T do it.  It’s that simple.  Even if it was something like “No, I’m not fucking that dude.  I don’t like him.”  For WHATEVER reason.  Nowadays there’s just ridiculous stuff that seems to serve no purpose to a girl other than to lower her value.  This whole “Redeye” stuff where they purposely ejaculate in the girls eyes….give me a FUCKIN break man.  It’s STUPID what these girls are agreeing to.

Q:  A lot of the people you worked with have passed away since you left the business.  Do you ever think about any of them, does that affect the way you live your life?

A:  I do think about them, yes I do.  I value every moment of my life.  I think about Marilyn Chambers, Jamie Gillis, John Leslie, all of these wonderful people who left us too soon.  They all passed away fairly recently and were some of the top stars in the XXX world but you really didn’t hear too much about them leaving us.  It’s weird to think about of course in terms of my own career.  I think it’s GREAT if people want to seek me out and see what I’ve done because I’m very proud of it and at peace with it, if they don’t want to, that’s fine as well.

Q:  How much different is your actual day to day life than what people might THINK your life is like?

A:  It’s incredibly normal.  My day is not very much different than anyone else’s.  Right now I’m working on some photoshop stuff for some friends of mine at the beauty salon where I get my hair and nails done.  I took my husband to the airport this morning.  I took my Spyder into the shop cause the radio’s not working.  I picked up my mail and went to the bank.  I’ve been doing so much on the computer that I haven’t had anything to eat yet.  I get on my riding lawnmower and do the weedeater.  It’s incredibly normal.

Q:  It always seemed like you liked what you were doing onscreen and that was one of the main reasons why people were so into you.  How much did you really enjoy what you did in those days and what stands out as some of your best work?

A:  I loved it.  What a great job.  What other job can you get where you get to wake up, get laid, hang out with hot guys and hot girls and go home and do  whatever you want?  Did I always have an orgasm every time?  No.  Did I love what I was doing anyway?  Absolutely.  I certainly did and I have no regrets. I’m probably as sexual now as I was then, maybe more so (laughs).   I loved being onscreen and I loved directing.  It was a lot of work being behind the scenes, much more work but it was gratifying.  I did “Careful He May Be Watching” which I also starred in.  I raised the money and produced it, I directed, I also helped edit it.  That was a helluva  lot of work involved  but it was worth it.  For me personally, that movie was quite an accomplishment.  I love all the things I have been involved with and love my fans.   Too many people are so uptight about sex, there’s nothing wrong with sex, it’s perfectly normal and it feels good.  It’s not supposed to be weird or shameful or embarrassing.  I think that’s what I always wanted to get across.
