Book Review: “Rocks- My Life In and Out of Aerosmith by Joe Perry with David Ritz – Simon & Schuster
In Rocks: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith, the new autobiography by Joe Perry, he takes you through a journey of his life. From his childhood dreams of becoming the next Jacque Cousteau to becoming the legendary guitar player that he is today. A man whose parents tried to protect him from “a culture defined by screaming guitars, motorcycles, tattoos, deviants and delinquents” and everything that is rock and roll.
The lead guitarist of Aerosmith digs deep into his past about the brotherhood of the band, especially his friendship with front man Steven Tyler. Quite possibly polar opposites in character, the “Toxic Twins” were just that… toxic. They were a force to be reckoned with as a song writing team, but the friction and feuding between them is endless.
Joe talks openly about his love for alcohol and drugs as Aerosmith rose to fame and about leaving the band to form The Joe Perry Project. He also shares with us his fears and excitement about rejoining Aerosmith to record `Done With Mirrors’. You may want to thank them.. or blame them, but he is proud to be a part of the history-making connection between rock and rap that came from their duet with Run-DMC on the 1986 remix of their song “Walk This Way”. That collaboration and eventually going on to release `Permanent Vacation’ in 1987 put them back on the charts. In a time when hair was big and Aerosmith were much older than the bands writing hits, they made an epic come back.
Along with the struggles of indulgence and excess, the musical endurance and over four decades of record making hits, earned Aerosmith a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is Joe’s personal story about rebellion, the guitars he loves, the groupies he doesn’t, his musical idols, his wife, his kids, the people who controlled him, those that enabled him and how he became the man he dreamed he could be the moment he first laid his left hand on a guitar (and played righty).
