DVD Review – Black Veil Brides – Alive and Burning
Love them or hate them, nobody can ever accuse the Black Veil Brides of being lazy. Since the beginning of 2014, they’ve played approximately 125 shows around the world, written, recorded and released their self-titled album & just released their first ever live concert DVD/Blu-Ray entitled “Alive and Burning” through Eagle Rock Entertainment on July 10th. They are presently out the Vans Warped Tour and have dates booked overseas in the fall.
While nothing beats the experience of a live show, concert DVD’s (or Blu-Ray’s) can be a nice memento if you were fortunate enough to attend the show documented on the release or can give you a taste of what to expect from that bands live show. However, some live DVD’s employ so many camera angles, quick edits (a MAJOR pet peeve of mine) and post-production trickery that they take away from the viewing experience…..see Kiss’ “Rock The Nation” as an example of D) ALL OF THE ABOVE! Thankfully, “Alive and Burning” WAS NOT a victim of those errors.
Filmed on November 1, 2014 at Los Angeles’ famed Wiltern Theatre. The Black Veil Brides performed a energetic 17 song set for a packed house of BVB Army devotees. This concert video shows that the band is one to be seen live. They are very well rehearsed without being robotic and definitely feed off the energy the crowd gives.
I really enjoyed this DVD as the band performed a well balanced set showcasing all their releases. It was a nice change of pace to see songs showcased and not an abundance of solo’s by the individual members. I’ve always enjoyed BVB’s cover of the Billy Idol classic “Rebel Yell” and live, it rocks even harder. Christian’s drum solo was short and sweet & didn’t kill the flow of the show! An unexpected highlight for me was Jinxx playing the electric violin during “Shadows Die” as I wasn’t aware he did that as I’d never seen the band live. Hopefully, they’ll perform their cover of my favorite KISS tune “Unholy” when I finally see them in person!
The bands’ use of lights and pyro is a nice touch. It’s just enough to accent the show but not too much where you feel the band is using the pyro to cover for flaws in their performance. *cough* Mötley Crüe *cough* They also avoided another of my major pet peeves about concert DVD’s and that is the interspersing of interviews or “behind the scenes” footage between songs. Leave that for the extras and Black Veil Brides did that! Bravo BVB, Bravo!
BVB wear their influences on their sleeves and have no doubt incorporated the strengths of those influences into their performance. It is nice to hear multi-part background harmony vocals, gang vocals and players in-tune with each other. Many bands of these days just come across as a cacophony of noise, not Black Veil Brides. Overall, the visuals are crisp and clear. The audio is mixed exceptionally well. Most importantly, the band delivers live. I highly recommend this DVD (or Blu-Ray) for anyone curious as to what all the buzz about the band is.
